Why Highly Sensitive People Need to Trust Their Own Path

After a beautiful year of slowing down and rediscovering myself post-divorce, I am finally emerging from a season of deep rest and redirecting my energy toward building my next chapter. It has been a life-changing year, to say the least, and I’m so grateful that I took the time I needed — without guilt — to reflect, grow, and “be.”

I had invested nearly 25 years in my relationship with my ex-husband, and there was a lot to unravel. Nothing happened that was too difficult or life-shattering, per se, but when you spend that much time with someone, recognizing where they end and you begin can get a bit fuzzy.

And as a highly sensitive person (HSP) and someone who needs more time than most to process big life transitions, it was important for me to take time to heal and create space to explore my next steps. I had never been on my own, and I was moving away from my friends and family of 20-plus years to relocate to Buffalo, New York. Not only was I stepping into new territory, but I was doing so without my familiar and established support network.

So, I took things slow, committed my full attention to this self-discovery, and acted on what felt right, one gentle moment at a time.

I meditated and read in my apartment when I craved quiet and took myself out to eat or for coffee when I felt lonely or wanted to be around others. I joined a women’s gym and took long walks along the Niagara River. I started a podcast and met some incredible people doing incredible work, learning so much about myself in the process.

I wrote poetry and practiced being in the present moment. I even took a wonderful trip to Dublin with my daughter. (And as someone who doesn’t travel often, it felt really good to expand my comfort zone in this way.)

In these quiet, intentional — and many times difficult — moments, a magical thing began to happen. My senses slowly resurfaced, and all the confusion and pain from the last few years started melting away.

It took some time, but disconnecting from the outer world and focusing on my inner world for so long shaped me in ways I can’t fully describe in words. It’s as if my soul finally felt safe and “home” enough to return to my body, and it became easier to breathe and feel joy in simple things again. I continued following my heart, and eventually my energy and intuition returned to me, coursing through my body in ways I had never experienced before.

After the heaviness of living a life that no longer resonated with my spirit finally lifted, the stirrings of my own heart grew louder — and continue to grow louder still.

The Cost of Living by Other People’s Expectations

Despite welcoming so much alone time this past year, I’ve also been longing to feel the embrace of community again, because let’s face it, lots of quiet and alone time are regular needs of ours (especially for introverted HSPs). And I am someone who can easily sink into that bubble of seclusion and comfort so deeply that it becomes isolating.

So, feeling that tug toward building connection again, I said “yes” to several invitations this past week (more than I typically would) and spent some quality time with friends and family. I joined an old friend at her cabin in the woods, enjoyed a family reunion, and reveled in a lovely dinner with my family…all within the span of five wonderful and exhausting days.

Though I’m grateful for this time with others, it brought up something for me I hadn’t felt in a long time: a deep sense of not being good enough, doing enough, or pushing hard enough to achieve some grand or amazing accomplishment in my life.

I had gone from feeling rested and grateful for this time alone, to suddenly feeling like I had to defend where I was in my life. Almost every conversation seemed to expose the weight I wasn’t losing, the job I wasn’t landing, the money I wasn’t making, etc.

It made me realize why we are all so exhausted and struggling to find joy and success in ways that leave us feeling maxed-out and depleted. It seemed like everyone was pushing so hard to do “the thing,” but there was this undercurrent of exhaustion, stress, and a constant need to keep up on all these to-do lists.

And with all the pressures to keep our lives moving along, it can be really difficult to follow our hearts and expand our souls with so many outside forces piling against us.

These pressures can stem from the media and social platforms, of course, but they also show up in everyday conversations where we are constantly being measured against impossible benchmarks of perfection. Our self-worth, then, can become tied to how well we fit these universal standards, and since we’re not all meant to be the same, most of us are fighting who we are so we can become a version of ourselves that is accepted by others.

This path will always leave us feeling depleted and like something is missing, since we’re pushing against our genetic makeup and the blueprint of our soul…and what I personally learned this past year is that the universe will make us very uncomfortable until we realize this and make the changes we need to follow our path again.

Your Intuition Already Knows the Way

It is only when we begin to recognize where we let the opinions of others dictate the choices we make in our lives that we can shift our consciousness inward and make choices that reflect our needs at the deepest level of our being. And once we really recognize these patterns and begin consistently making better choices for ourselves, regardless of what society tells us is “right,” we will eventually end up somewhere completely new — and even more importantly, just right for us.

When it comes to working with our energy and developing stronger intuition, following our own hearts and journeys always leads us to a better place…it’s the single most precious of gifts we can give ourselves.

For example, if the world is telling you that you must push yourself every day to eat perfectly clean and outperform everyone at the gym to get fit, but your body loves the occasional sweet and gentle walks instead, honoring that gentler pace will help you feel much healthier. Or maybe you feel pressured to have a million followers on social media before you can claim you’re accomplished in your work, but your soul loves working quietly behind the scenes within a gentler rhythm.

We must trust that what we truly desire is the direct compass to our rightful path and honor what our spirit is craving…which is reveling in what we truly love, deep in our souls.

The universe, your guides, God, your higher self…however you refer to that higher power…will support you along this journey. There are so many times I almost lost faith in my path and wasn’t seeing the results I’d imagined.

But I kept going. And then I’d get discouraged. And then I kept going again.

And what I see now, looking back, is that when we are brave enough to make such big changes in our lives, there is inevitably this messy middle when we’re shedding the old and stepping into the new, and it can feel like nothing you do is working.

And I’m so glad I trusted the process, and I hope you are too…because this is where the real magic and transformation happens. Simply waking every day with your breath, moving with the rythm of your own body, and following your own joy a little each day will eventually take you somewhere so beautiful, it’s hard to imagine being anywhere else.

Because what truly matters in our lives is spending time each day doing that which lights up our souls.

Even if it’s as simple as sipping an unhurried cup of tea, breaking out your journal to write, taking time with your watercolors to paint, or taking a nap midday, it’s your right to choose what you do with your time. We can’t show up in life as our best selves if we’re exhausted, depleted, and stuck in survival mode, which is where many of us seem to be.

Living Life on Your Own Terms

So, what is one way you can honor your own journey today? How can you ignore what others are doing and make a different choice that reflects what you truly long for, deep in your heart? How can you be gentler on yourself when you choose to live life on your own terms?

Because when we step away from and ignore those outer voices, eventually, the clouds will part, and we recognize beneath all the confusion our own voice.

And that is the most beautiful, loving, and supportive voice there is — the only one that truly knows the way.

Choosing a Gentler Path Forward

If you’re ready to stop second-guessing your path and step into a life that is gentler and more reflective of your own intuition and desires, I’d love to help. I’m an ICF-certified and Gifted Intuitive Coach, having recently gained my certification by Sonia Choquette, who personally trained me how to use frequency, energy, and vibration in the coaching process.

By using my intuition and reading your energy, I can help you get to the root of your challenges more quickly and help you activate and strengthen your inner guidance.

If you’d like to explore this process in more detail, you can read more about me and my process or set up a free discovery session
